CCTV9英语新闻:Singh meets Putin on military cooperation

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has warpped up his three-day visit to Russia, during which he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks on political and economic cooperation。 The two sides have agreed to promote military and energy cooperation。

Putin and Singh agreed to widen military cooperation between their countries. In a statement issued after their talks, Putin and Singh said they would step up joint efforts in rocket, weapons systems and naval technology. They stressed military and technological cooperation as the most important part of the bilateral strategic partnership.

Energy cooperation also topped the leaders’ discussions. They agreed to speed up the finalising of deals on two new nuclear energy units at India’s Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant. Putin said the first unit has been put into operation, and would be linked to India’s power grid shortly.

He is optimistic about future constructions.

"The second energy unit is also being finalized and we have the plans to construct the third and the fourth energy units as well," Putin said.

The two sides also agreed to supplying Russia’s liquified natural gas to India, and said they would study the possibility of pumping Russian oil and gas by pipeline。

Singh had further issues on his agenda。 "I also sought President Putin’s support for the launch of negotiation on a free trade agreement with the customs unit of Russia, Tajikistan and Belarus," Singh said。

According to the statement, Russia also pledged help to India by investing in the country’s civil aviation sector and fertiliser production as well.
